RCA Photo of the Week - May 4, 2023

May the 4th be with you!

Since today is Star Wars Day, it made me wonder what people in Romeo did to celebrate that franchise. Luckily, I uncovered one example as shown with this photograph taken for the May 26, 1999 edition of The Romeo Observer.

According to that issue, 51 kids from the Romeo United Methodist Church attended the screening of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menance at the Romeo Theatre on May 19 aka opening day. Afterwards, they went back to the church's fellowship hall, which was "turned into a scene from 'Star Wars' for dinner."

Organized by the Reverend Dr. Gary Glanville and Joe and Diane Erhardt, the event included strobe lights, stars and space ships floating from the ceiling, R2-D2 roaming around, four TVs playing the older films in the series, and a stereo blasting the iconic soundtrack. The decorations were done by Vera's Balloons.

It even went on to describe the food they ate that evening. These included "light saber salad, Jawa's Jello juggler, R2-Pop2, and galaxy garlic bread."

It sounded like it was a lot of fun!

What you do plan on doing for Star Wars Day?
