RCA Photo of the Week - April 27, 2023

The first annual SpringFest kicked off today, and what better way to celebrate than to plant some flowers just like these ladies are doing in this photograph.

The June 15, 1967 issue of The Romeo Observer captured two women - Emma Jane Brice (left) and Shirley Jones (not the actress) - from the Juliet Garden Club planting flowers around the trees along Main Street.

According to a July 6 article from that year entitled, "A Blossoming Report on Main Street Trees," this was the group's contribution to the village's beautification program called the Village Beautiful campaign. It started with planting 40 Skyline Locust trees along Main Street earlier that spring. The article also states that the flowers being planted at the base of those trees were petunias.

This photo and article can be found both in The Romeo Observer as well as in the Juliet Garden Club scrapbooks from the Romeo & Juliet Garden Club Collection.

To see both collections, you can call (586) 690-4890 or email rca@romeodistrictlibrary.org to schedule an appointment, OR you can visit the Romeo Community Archives Open House on Saturday, May 6 at 11am to view them without said appointment.
