With Memorial Day coming up, the Romeo Community Archives wants to honor those whose lives were taken by war. One of those was Marine Lance Corporal David Bruce Koenig, who is seen in this photograph. He is the only solider from Romeo who was killed during the Vietnam War.
The front page of the May 11, 1967 issue of The Romeo Observer reveals that Koenig was killed in action on Wednesday, May 3 in the vicinity of Huong Hoa. This was during Operation Beacon Star.
Corporal Koenig graduated from the St. Augustine High School in Richmond in 1964. In April 1966, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and had served in Vietnam for seven months prior to his death.
He was survived by his parents Paul and Mary Koenig as well as his brothers Lawrence and Eugene.
If you know someone who served, feel free to share their story.
