RCA Photo of the Week - May 18, 2023

May is National Nurse Month, and I happened to come across a photograph of these nurses from the same Romeo Observer issue that contained last week's picture.

The May 6, 1971 issue of The Romeo Observer explains that these women received funding for their nursing training throug the 12th annual nurses scholarship dinner-dance, which was going to be held at the Rochester Elks club on Friday, May 14. The Romeo chapter, Community Hospital Ladies auxiliary sponsored this event as a way to raise money for their scholarship program. The organization started this particular program in 1963 to offer aid for those "training in registered nursing, practical nursing[,] and x-ray technican."

Starting from the sitting to the standing, the recipients for the 1971 annual nurses scholarship were Phyllis Reid, LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse), Imlay City; Faye Schramm Duckert, RN (Registered Nurse), Romeo; Mary McCallumore, PN, Berville; Barbara Steinbrink Marshall, PN, Romeo; Randa Bechtel Widdows, RN, Almont; and Patricia Spens, PN, Almont.

I'm sure that these women were feeling grateful for a scholarship like these. I hope they had long and wonderful nursing careers.
