THE ROMEO MONDAY CLUB, Celebrating Women's History Month

The Romeo Monday Club celebrates 100 years!

Do you know that the Romeo Monday Club has been an ongoing women's group since 1879? The Club was originally formed as a Chautauqua Circle, and after several name changes, Romeo Monday Club was chosen in 1892 due to its Monday meetings. Chautauqua is a lake located in New York and was the Chautauqua Institute site, which offered a course of adult education study that took four years to complete. Several of the founding women completed the course, and the quest for literary education has continued.

The Romeo Monday Club chooses a yearly theme of study and hosts fundraising events to provide charitable donations to the community. It has made donations to the Romeo District Library, the Romeo Community Schools, Girlstown, Haven Farm, and other local organizations. Since 1907, the Club has offered a fine arts scholarship to high school students to further the students' study of music, art, or writing.

The Romeo Monday Club is the first women's club in Romeo and the second oldest women's group in Michigan. With a heritage to be proud of, we honor this longstanding Club to celebrate Women's History Month.
